de Havilland DH.66 Hercules Aircraft - photo wallpapers; Megawallpapers.org : The origins of the De Havilland D.H.66 lay in the British Air [br]Ministry's 1925 agreement to pay Imperial Airways a subsidy of £500,000 [br]per year to take over the British Royal Air Force's mail route from [br]Cairo, Egypt, to Karachi, India. The agreement was to provide freight, [br]mail, and passenger services across this inhospitable territory every [br]two weeks. Imperial Airways thus issued a requirement for a [br]multi-engined aircraft suitable for this arduous task. De Havilland [br]Aircraft Company of the United Kingdom responded with the D.H.66. This [br]was a large biplane powered by three 420 hp Bristol Jupiter VI radial [br]engines, with wooden wings and a fuselage built of steel tubes, and [br]containing two large plywood boxes. The forward box contained seats for [br]seven passengers, the radio operator and his equipment, and storage for [br]mail. The rear box was for baggage and freight. The new aircraft was [br]named Hercules, chosen in a competition run by a British magazine and [br]won by E.F. Hope-Jones of Eton College. The Hercules entered service in [br]Cairo in January 1927 with the inaugural Imperial Airways flight to [br]Karachi. The "City of Cairo" D.H.66 featured in this artwork crashed on [br]the island of Timor in Indonesia in April 1931, while on the first [br]experimental mail flight between Croydon, near London and Melbourne, [br]Australia. The Mail was rescued and flown to its destination by the [br]famous American flyer Charles Kingsford-Smith in his celebrated [br]"Southern Cross."[br]Country of origin: GB [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Engines: three 420hp Bristol Jupiter VI radials [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Wingspan: 24.23 m (79ft 6in) [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Lenght: 16.92 m (55ft 6in) [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Height: 5.56 m (18ft 3in) [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Weight loaded: 7067 kg (15,600lb) [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Cruising speed: 177km/h (110mph) [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Service celling: 3960 m (13,000ft) [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Range: 845 km (525 miles) [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________ [br]Passengers + crew: 8 + 3 [br]_________________________________________________________________________________________________
