What attracted a talented cast of John Heard, Debi Mazar and Lesley Ann Warren to the project is anybody's guess. Festival playdates will comprise its only theatrical exposure. The key problem is the thoroughly unlikable nature of nearly every character. Andy Comeau plays a hapless, highly irritating Hollywood actor who wants to kill himself. A ringing cell phone in a nearby bush distracts him from this endeavor. The phone belongs to a once-mighty film producer (Heard) whose career is in rapid decline. He is juggling negotiations with a superstar actor, a nagging shrew of a wife (Warren) and a pregnant mistress (Mazar) all of whom can't seem to see through the lies and deception that surround this jerk. Using the found cell phone, Comeau lures all these characters to his hilltop apartment. Here, the producer's web of deceit quickly unravels in a series of alcohol-fueled scenes of bickering and backbiting. Writer-directors Glen Scantlebury and Lucy Phillips never seem sure if they want this static talkathon to be comic or dramatic. It winds up being neither. [br] [br]
