Broadway: Theater District and Times Square. [br]The gaudy, vulgar spectale of Times Square is for many around the world the ultimate symbol of New York City. The crowds, the horns, the towering advertisements, the blaze of flashing neon lightsthere is something incredibly powerful at work here, at least for a first-time visitor. For better of for worse, this can at times feel like the center of the universe, aspecially on New Year's Eve. Originally known as Longacre Square, this monumentalcrossroads changed to its present name in 1904, when the New York Times moved its headquarters to One Times Square. At midnight on December 31, 1904, the paper threw a fireworks celebration for itself, and the tradition has continued ever since. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to Time Square, with millions more watching on television world-wide, as the ball drops here signify a new year. With a glittering exuberance that rivals even Las Vegas, the spirit of Times Square hasn't changet much since its creation. While the Times has moved around the corner, it left its Motogram electronic headline sign wrapped around its former home at One Times Square. This beacon of light, along with Brodway's original blazing theater marquees, transformed the square: today all buildings are required by the city to devote a portion of their facades to illuminated advertisements. Beyond the pomp and glitz, of course. Time Square is also the country's premier showcase for theater. It has become the Mecca of the theater world, attracting over two million persons a year. Do note, howerer, that "Broadway theater" refers not to a geographic location but to a theatrical standard of production. A Brodway show is large-scale in every aspect, with cast and crew the size of small armies, spectacular set designs, and big-name stars. Times Square provides the space and the crowds for such grand productions. Off-Brodway shows are smaller, with a minimum 100-seat audience capacity. Off-Brodway is smaller yet, and often experimental in nature. Some of the grand old theaters are just now reviving. The historic New Amsterdam Theater was remodeled by Disney Company, the New Victory by the Times Square Redevelopment organization. The two face each other on West 42nd Street, once a menacing thoroughfare of porn shops but now much more family oriented. The latest spectacular skyscraper facing onto this celebrated square is the Conde Nast Building, erected in 1999.
