Brooklyn Bridge: The world's first steel suspension bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge links Manhattan to Brooklyn and, at 5,989 feet (ca. 1826 m) long and 278 feet tall (nearly 85 m), is quite impressive even today. The bridge was designed in 1869 by Prussian immigrant John Roebling, who developed a form of wire rope for use on canal barges that was strong enough to employ on larger structures such as bridges. These cables, along with other engineering brakthroughs like iron trussing, gave the bridge a sense of weightless suspension that contrasts vividly with the mountainous Gothic stone towers through which the roadway runs. The bridge took fourteen years and $ 15 million to build, not to mention that construction claimed twenty lives, most lost when the two 3,400-ton caissons were lowered into the riverbed to create a foundation. Another casualty was Roebling himself, who died of complications after his foot was crushed by a ferry while he was surveying the site. His son Washington took over the project, which he completed from sickbed with his wife Emily in charge. The bridge was opened to the public on May 24, 1883 with much fanfare. A one-and-a-half mile (2.4 km) pedestrian ramp has unfortunately replaced the original walk-way, but the bridge still offers an exhilarating stroll with amazing views of lower Manhattan.
