Avia Air Aircraft - photo wallpapers: Avia Air was an airline based in Aruba. Aruba is a 32 km-long island of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, 27 km north of the Paraguaná Peninsula, Falcón State, Venezuela. It is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. [br]Unlike much of the Caribbean region, it has a dry climate and an arid, [br]cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to [br]the island can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. It has a land area [br]of 193 km². Discovered and claimed by Spain in 1499, Aruba was conquered by the Dutch in 1636. The island's economy has been dominated by three main industries: gold mining, petroleum, and tourism. In 1944 its oil processing refinery, which was at the time one of [br]the largest in the region, would be attacked by a German submarine [br]under the command of Nazi Admiral Donitz. [br]The refinery's continued existence is thanks to a glitch in the [br]submarine's launching mechanism, causing the vessel to explode instead. [br]An earlier torpedo, which was launched onto a beach, had failed to [br]ignite. Aruba seceded from the Netherlands Antilles on January 1, 1986, and became a separate, self-governing member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Movement toward full independence by 1996 was halted at Aruba's request in 1990.
