Shaping the future with Nacre: Airbus is spearheading a new research consortium of 35 partners from 13 countries, which aims to validate technologies that will enable new aircraft concepts to be assessed – and possibly incorporated into future aircraft designs. Launched in April 2005, the New Aircraft Concepts Research or NACRE is a four-year project which is partly funded by the European Commission. During the past 50 years, in addition to safety and security, the main driver for aircraft design was to improve operational efficiency in particular by reducing fuel consumption. Given that air traffic is forecast to more than double in the next 20 years, significant progress will need to be achieved in improving the efficiency but minimising the environmental impact to ensure the possibility of future growth. Looking into the future, other goals such as improving passenger comfort and making air travel even more affordable may not be achievable with today’s mindset associated to the classic aircraft configurations. Airbus is therefore looking at new aircraft concepts which may provide the right opportunity to permit the required step changes. [br]The NACRE project does not concentrate on one specific novel aircraft project but rather aims to develop solutions at a generic aircraft component level – cabin, wing, powerplant system and fuselage - which will enable the results to be applicable for a range of new aircraft designs. From now until 2009, NACRE will concentrate on three themes tailored to address specific subsets of design drivers: [br]- the environmentally friendly concept, which will focus on minimising impact on the environment; [br]- the quality concept, aimed at offering enhanced comfort for passengers and optimised payload for freight; [br]- the money saving concept which puts the biggest emphasis on low manufacturing and operating costs, and improved revenue.
