Construction giant Nakheel has spent billions over the last few years dumping sand into the ocean to create two astounding man-made island complexes, each shaped like the reflection of a palm tree on the water. When construction is complete later this decade, each Palm island community will be home to over 1,000 mega mansions, 4,000 waterfront villas and 5,000 high-rise apartment units, most of which have already been sold to some of the wealthiest people on the planet. But there will be plenty of room for tourists, as 100 luxury hotel chains (including Hilton, Accor and Bermuda’s Atlantis) have already signed deals to build resorts on these unique islands. Residents and visitors will never have to travel back to the mainland, as these developments will contain every modern necessity, from supermarkets and movie theaters to killer whale theme parks and PGA-level golf courses.
