Talbot Lago T26 - 1947 - wallpapers: Automobiles Talbot was acquired in 1935 by Tony Lago, a visionary who had been brought in a year earlier as the firm's general manager. While he continued to produce the existing line - now called Talbot Lagos - he immediately set about creating a new higher performance engine by grafting an overhead valve head with hemispherical combustion chambers, creating the "Grand Sport" model. Highly successful, it - along with a companion chassis only model for coachbuilders called the "Lago SS" - were largely responsible for the survival of the marque. Following the war, Lago revised his engine again, increasing displacement to 4.5 liters and adding yet another new hemispherical combustion chamber head, this time with valve gear operated by twin camshafts mounted near the top of the new seven main bearing block. This powerful new engine proved highly successful in racing, where a tuned version powered the 1950 Le Mans winner in the hands of Louis Rosier.More importantly, this smooth and reliable powerplant proved ideal for luxurious grand touring models, which were equipped with either two Zenith or Stromberg carburetors, independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes and shock absorbers, and 18" Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels.Designed as a luxury road car for the elite motoring enthusiasts of Europe, speed and comfort was important. So, too was styling, and the new Talbot Lago was shown at many post war concours, where it did quite well, just as it does today. The example offered here is a T26 Talbot-Lago Record, Tony Lago's post-war premier cabriolet. Although it carries factory coachwork, the design was heavily influenced by the work of renowned French coachbuilder, Figoni et Falaschi. Nonetheless, each Record is slightly different having been hand built and tailored to the client's wishes. The striking example offered here was built in 1947 for a French Naval officer and was delivered December 16, 1948. Well known in French car circles, this spectacular Talbot has benefited from a comprehensive body off restoration to professional standards by a marque expert. The vendor, a noted authority on French cars, has indicated that no expense was spared to restore the car to authentic condition. The car was invited to Pebble Beach in 1992 and won Best in Class in the Talbot Lago Class, against a highly competitive field that year. It was judged by French judges and was considered the most authentic post war Talbot of its genre. At the Classic Car Club of America's Grand Classic in Seattle in 1994, it won its class, was judged 100 points and obtained its senior status. The car is well documented, and is offered with a copy of the factory build sheet and the original factory literature. The vendor will also supply to the new owner additional documentation in English for the T26.This car is fully capable of performing on today's highways at speed. In a recent road test, it acquitted itself well, starting easily and running well. The chassis feels light for the time, and the car's acceleration and handling make it a pleasure to drive. Needless to say, its outstanding condition and provenance will also make it a highly competitive entrant in the most demanding judged concours events. [br]
