Cessna 500, Megawallpapers: The Cessna Citation 500 was a hallmark of aviation history for its role in taking pilots who were not previously jet pilots and introducing them to straight turbine aircraft operations (in lieu of those that had turboprop engines) in an aircraft that had fewer moving parts and higher cruising speeds. While the Learjets of the 1960's were intimidating to some for their speed and initial accident rates, the Cessna Citation 500 was the first aircraft to aggressively target a segment of pilots who could upgrade from slower propeller-driven aircraft. [br]While this was the first light jet to actively court pilots who were upgrading from the twin turboprop or twin / single high performance single engine aircraft, it also introduced a new component to aviation - the "owner flown" private jet. The aircraft featured cabin pressurization, slower than typical jet cruise speeds, yet also excellent short field performance. [br]The official designation of the name "Citation 500" evolved into the Citation I model, which was improved upon to become the Citation II also known as the Citation 550 and finally Citation V series. (The latest incarnation of this basic design is the Citation Bravo and Citation Encore.) All of these aircraft shared a straight wing, excellent cockpit visibility and access to short fields (typically less than 5000 feet at sea level) that had previously been impossible for the famous predecessor, the Learjet.
