This time the [br]problem is a design flaw with the plane's center wing box, which is where its [br]wings join the fuselage.[br]The replacement for the [br]Sonic Cruiser project was dubbed the 7E7 (with a development code name of Y2.) [br]The "E" was said to stand for various things, depending upon the [br]audience. To some, it stood for "efficiency", to others it stood for [br]"environmentally friendly". In the end, Boeing claimed it merely [br]stood for "Eight", after the aircraft was eventually rechristened [br]"787". A public naming competition was also held, for which out of [br]500,000 votes cast online the winning title was Dreamliner.[br]Boeing believes large [br]capacity aircraft flying to big, overcrowded, dispersal “hubs” are passé. [br]Travellers want speed and direct connections. The B787 Dreamliner (formerly the [br]B7E7) is the result of Boeing’s new preoccupation. The aircraft is swift and [br]fuel efficient, with a cruising speed of Mach 0.85. It is smaller and can access [br]regional airports without fuss. It also has a range that can extend to 16,000km [br]carrying about 280 passengers. The good news for passengers is the B-787 is [br]pressurised for a lower altitude and with higher cabin humidity. The catch is, [br]the plane will not be certified and delivered until 2008 or later - and [br]delivery delays have left customers and Boeing red-faced. Rival Airbus keenly [br]aware that Boeing may be onto something, is also working on a smaller, more [br]fuel-efficient A350 to compete head-to-head with the B787. Boeing may yet have [br]the last laugh. Qantas has committed a potential US$18 billion for up to 115 of [br]the sleek B787s with the first 65 coming on line from 2008 if production [br]glitches don't hold up delivery.[br]Variants: There are three variants [br]of the 787 and all launched at the same time in 2004. The 787-8 will enter [br]service in 2009. The 787-9 will enter service next in 2010. The last to enter [br]service will be the 787-3.[br]Engine [br]interchangeability: The two types of engines compatible with the 787 will use a [br]standard electrical interface, potentially allowing any aircraft to be fitted [br]with Rolls-Royce or GE engines at any time. This flexibility will allow an [br]airline to switch from one manufacturer to the other in the event of [br]technological developments that conform more closely to their operating [br]profile. Boeing's goal is to make changing engine types as simple as a standard [br]same-manufacturer replacement. According to ILFC's Vice President of Marketing, [br]Marty Olson, changing engine types on a 787 could take as long as 15 days and [br]so be economically infeasible. "You'd have to take all the pylon, [br]everything from the wing down, off" Olson said. He went on to complain [br]that Boeing is still promoting the 24 hours change in spite of promises to alter [br]their marketing. Current aircraft can have engines changed to those of a [br]different manufacturer but this rarely happens due to the costs involved. [br]Boeing's response is that the design is not yet finalized and 24 hours remains [br]their goal.[br]Boeing 787-3 Dreamliner: [br]The [br]Boeing 787-3 Dreamliner is a super-efficient airplane with new [br]passenger-pleasing features. It features a wing and structure optimized for [br]shorter-range flights. It will bring the economics of large jet transports to [br]the middle of the market, using 20 percent less fuel than any other airplane of [br]its size.[br]Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner: [br]The [br]Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is a superefficient airplane with new [br]passenger-pleasing features. It will bring the economics of large jet [br]transports to the middle of the market, using 20 percent less fuel than any [br]other airplane of its size.[br]Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner: [br]The [br]Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is a slightly bigger version of the 787-8. Both are [br]super-efficient airplanes with new passenger-pleasing features. They will bring [br]the economics of large jet transports to the middle of the market, using 20 [br]percent less fuel than any other airplanes of their size.
