About White House
White House: It's one thing to see the White House in photographs or postcards. It's another thing entirely to see the famed building sitting behind the fences on Pennsylvania Ave or the Ellipse- And it's a third thing altrogether to walk though the public rooms of the White House and experience firsthand this curious combination of a presidential palace and a home. Like the Capitol, at the other end of Pensylvania Ave NW, the White House was designed by an architect selected in a competition run by Georg Washington and Tomas Jefferson. The winner, James Hoban, was born and trained in Ireland. He based his design of this Georgian building on a villa in Dublin. Washington oversaw the construction, and his succesor, John Adams, became the first resident when the capital moved from Philadelphia in 1800. The original building has been repaired and expanded countless times since. Dolley Madison painted it white to cover the damage after the British burned Washington in 1814. Theodore Roosvelt added the East Wing for office space. The Trumans almost completely rebuilt the structure, and Jacqueline Kennedy restored the public rooms with historic art and furniture. The end result boasts the scale of a gracious country house and the look of a small museum. The tour is self-guided, so you can linger as long as you like, but the currents of people coursing through the rooms can drag you along, so it's best to peruse the free pamphlet and know what you want to see before you clear security, to get the most out of your visit....
