Curtiss CR-6 Aircraft - photo wallpapers; Megawallpapers.org : In May 1919, the newspaper owners Ralph Joseph Jr., and Herbert Pulitzer established to be awarded annually to the aircraft that won a closedcircuit speed competition within the framework of the National Air Races. When the first contest was held in 1920, it attracted no fewer than 65 entries. In the years that followed, it led to the development of high-speed aircraft whose manufacturers had an eye on military orders. One such cinstructors was Glenn Curtiss, who developed a formidable line of racing aircraft at this time; its precursor was the CR-1, constructed to take part in the 1921 Pulitzer contest, and which it won. Curtiss machines won three more Pulitzer races, in 1932, 1923 and 1935. The latter, also the last, was won by a Curtiss R-6. The aircraft shown is the R-6 flown by Lester Maitland at Selfridge Field, Michigan in the 1922 race.
