About Airbus A380
Airbus A380: The A380 represents a benchmark in technology from which future commercial aircraft programmes will evolve. With the A380, an array of new technologies for materials, processes, systems and engines has been developed, tested and adopted. Every new technology is closely studied to determine its effects over the lifetime of the aircraft and is chosen for its proven maturity and long-term advantages. The A380 takes the innovative application of composites a step further, with greater use of them than ever before, including the centre wing box for the first time and the rear fuselage. Other innovative steps taken with the A380 include its variable frequency electrical generation, the 5000 psi hydraulic system and the electro-hydrostatic actuators which help to reduce weight, improve performance and increase flexibility. The A380s advanced cockpit features state-of the-art interactive displays and extended integrated modular avionics linked by ethernet datalink. Airbus also seeks the most appropriate application of innovative manufacturing techniques. It was the first to introduce laser beam welding on civil aircraft with the A318, before using it more extensively on the A380. History: The 555 seat, double deck Airbus A380 is the most ambitious civil aircraft program yet. When it enters service in March 2006, the A380 will be the world's largest airliner, easily eclipsing Boeing's 747. Airbus first began studies on a very large 500 seat airliner in the early 1990s. The European manufacturer saw developing a competitor and successor to the Boeing 747 as a strategic play to end Boeing's dominance of the very large airliner market and round out Airbus' product line-up. Airbus began engineering development work on such an aircraft, then designated the A3XX, in June 1994. Airbus studied numerous design configurations for the A3XX and gave serious consideration to a single deck aircraft which would have seated 12 abreast and twin vertical tails. However Airbus ...
